Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress ending his long-standing membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and marking a significant political shift in the North-central region.
The governor received his APC membership card on Friday during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
Explaining his decision, Mr Mutfwang said the move was motivated by the need for clear direction in governance and closer alignment with the federal government to fast-track development in the state.
“At this point in our journey, Plateau State requires purposeful leadership and clarity of direction. Aligning with the APC will allow us to better synchronise our policies with those of the federal government for improved service delivery and accelerated development,” the governor said.
His defection followed an earlier announcement by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, who disclosed on 18 December 2025 that Mr Mutfwang had joined the ruling party. The announcement was made during the APC National Caucus meeting in Abuja.
“With Governor Mutfwang joining our party, the entire North-central zone is now under APC leadership. This is a major strategic gain for the party,” Mr Yilwatda said.
Before his formal defection, Mr Mutfwang had resigned from the PDP in a letter dated 29 December 2025, addressed to the ward chairman of Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area. In the letter, he expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve as governor on its platform.
“I remain thankful to the PDP for the trust and support extended to me over the years, but prevailing political realities have made it necessary to seek a new platform in the interest of Plateau State,” he stated.
Elected governor in 2023 on the PDP platform, Mr Mutfwang’s exit adds to a growing list of defections from the opposition party to the APC, further consolidating the ruling party’s influence across the North-central geopolitical zone.
