Taaooma urges public education on road safety

Popular Nigerian skit maker and content creator, Taaooma, has called for improved public awareness and reorientation on road safety and emergency response across the country, stressing that many Nigerians do not know what to do or who to contact during critical situations on the roads.

The comedian made the call via a post on X (formerly Twitter), where she lamented the poor state of Nigeria’s road and transportation system despite the existence of multiple regulatory and safety agencies.

Taaooma recounted a disturbing experience on the New Coastal Road, where she encountered a corpse that remained unattended for several days.

“There was a dead body that stayed like three days on the New Coastal Road. The first day I saw it, I thought it was a homeless person taking a nap. But by the third day, when I passed again, the body was still there and already rotting,” she wrote.

She explained that the situation was only resolved after she contacted the Lagos emergency number.

“I called 767 and it was immediately taken care of,” Taaooma said.

According to her, the incident reflects a broader problem of inadequate public knowledge about emergency response channels in Nigeria.

“People need to know what to do in cases of emergencies and situations like that,” she added.

Taaooma also questioned the effectiveness of the numerous road safety and enforcement agencies operating in the country, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Vehicle Inspection Office, and the Police.

“FRSC, LASTMA, VIO, Police—like 20 billion other parastatals—yet the roads and transportation system are still nothing to write home about,” she stated.

She urged relevant authorities to prioritise public education and sensitisation, noting that better awareness could save lives and ensure quicker responses to emergencies on Nigerian roads.
