FG approves textbooks for 2026–2028 school years

The Federal Government has released the final list of textbooks approved for use in Nigerian schools from 2026 to 2028.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced the release on Monday, following the completion of the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise.

The approved materials cover four class levels — Primary One, Primary Four, Junior Secondary School One and Senior Secondary School One.

According to the ministry, each approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code containing information such as the title, author, publisher and year of publication.

The ministry said the system was introduced to improve the identification, monitoring and accountability of textbooks approved for use in schools.

It stated, “The introduction of the Ranking/QR Tracking Code represents an important step towards strengthening the monitoring and control of approved instructional materials and ensuring greater transparency in their selection, procurement and utilisation.”

The exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by Alausa.

The ministry explained that the process of assigning tracking codes contributed to the time taken to complete and validate the approved list.

It said, “The Ministry noted that the additional process of generating and assigning unique codes to each ranked textbook contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.”

The government said the ranking exercise would be conducted in phases, with the next phase covering Primary Two, Primary Five, JSS Two and SS Two textbooks.

“The ranking exercise is being implemented in phases. Following the completion and approval of the first phase, preparations will commence for the second round, covering textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2,” the ministry stated.

It added that the same tracking measures would be applied to textbooks covered by the subsequent phase.

The ministry urged schools, publishers, education authorities and procurement agencies to rely on the approved list when selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.

It said the exercise was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure that pupils and teachers have access to relevant, quality and curriculum-aligned learning materials.

“The exercise forms part of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that learners and teachers have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials, while strengthening transparency and accountability in textbook provision across Nigerian schools,” it stated.

The ministry also directed stakeholders to comply with the approved list in providing and using textbooks for the specified classes.

The full 2026–2028 approved textbook list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Codes assigned to each title, has been made available by the ministry.
