Christmas: Olubadan urges Christians to emulate Christ, pray for Nigeria

Olubadan to strip Ladoja of Otun title, claims ally

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has congratulated Christians on the celebration of Christmas, urging them to reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ and offer prayers for Nigeria amid prevailing challenges.

In a Christmas message issued on Tuesday in Ibadan through his Chief Press Secretary, Ayoade Olugbemiga, the monarch described Christmas as a period for love, peace and unity, stressing that the virtues exemplified by Jesus Christ remain relevant to nation-building.

Oba Ladoja expressed gratitude to God for his emergence as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, noting that his reign has been marked by peace and good health.

“I join Christians all over the world to celebrate Christmas and to thank God for sparing my life to ascend the throne of my forefathers, endowing me with wisdom, sound health and a peaceful reign,” he said.

The traditional ruler called on Christians to live by the teachings of Christ, whom he described as the Prince of Peace.

“I urge Christians to emulate Jesus Christ, who taught love, tolerance and peaceful coexistence irrespective of tribe, religion, colour or language. He was born to save all of mankind,” the monarch stated.

Oba Ladoja also urged Nigerians to use the season to pray fervently for the country, citing insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, disunity and infrastructural deficits as major issues confronting the nation.

“Nigeria is faced with numerous challenges, and this should spur us to pray for healing for our land and wisdom for our leaders,” he added.

The Olubadan further appealed to security agencies to strengthen measures to safeguard lives and property during the yuletide, while advising citizens to celebrate responsibly.

He also encouraged moderation in festivities, calling on Nigerians to eat and drink with restraint and maintain peace throughout the holiday period.

Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State who served between 2003 and 2007, ascended the throne following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away in July 2025 at the age of 90.
