The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has called on Nigerians to celebrate the Christmas season responsibly by avoiding drug abuse and prioritising their health and safety.
In a Christmas goodwill message shared on the agency’s official X handle on Thursday, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) commended officers of the agency for their commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking across the country.
“I extend warm Christmas greetings to all Nigerians and to our officers and men whose dedication and sacrifice in protecting our communities from drug abuse remain invaluable,” Marwa said.
He urged members of the public to use the festive period as an opportunity to make positive lifestyle choices that are free from the influence of illicit substances.
“This season should be one of joy, reflection and healthy decisions. Staying drug-free is essential to protecting lives, families and communities,” he added.
Marwa stressed that collective responsibility was key to reducing the harmful impact of drugs on society, noting that individual choices could significantly contribute to national wellbeing.
“Together, we can build a safer, healthier and more prosperous Nigeria. I wish Nigerians a peaceful, joyful and drug-free Christmas,” he said.
The NDLEA’s appeal comes amid rising concerns over drug consumption in the country. Data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime World Drug Report 2025 indicates that drug use prevalence in Nigeria stands at 14.4 per cent—almost three times the global average—affecting an estimated 14.3 million people between the ages of 15 and 64.
The agency noted that increased public awareness, vigilance and personal responsibility, particularly during festive periods, remain crucial in curbing drug-related harm and promoting safer communities nationwide.
