The Federal Government has announced public holidays for the 2025 Christmas and New Year festivities.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, said the holidays were approved on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
According to the statement, Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, have been declared public holidays to mark Christmas Day and Boxing Day, while Thursday, January 1, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday for the New Year celebration.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the festive period to reflect on the core values associated with Christmas, including love, peace, humility, and sacrifice.
“The festive season provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice, which the birth of Jesus Christ represents,” the minister said.
He also called on citizens, regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds, to pray for peace, improved security, and national development.
“The minister appeals to Nigerians of all faiths and ethnicities to use this period to pray for peace, enhanced security and sustained national progress,” the statement added.
Tunji-Ojo further advised the public to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations, while wishing Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
He said the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens during the festive period and beyond.
