Yuletide: TRACE begins special traffic patrol on Lagos-Ibadan, 17 routes

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has announced a special traffic enforcement and monitoring operation across 18 major corridors in the state ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The agency said the yuletide operation will run from Monday, December 22, 2025, to Monday, January 5, 2026, and is aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and safeguarding lives and property during the festive period.

In a statement issued on Saturday, TRACE Public Relations Officer, Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the initiative was introduced in response to the expected surge in human and vehicular movement across the state.

“The special patrol operation is designed to effectively manage traffic and guarantee the safety of road users, particularly during a period when traffic volume is usually high,” Akinbiyi said.

He explained that the exercise would involve round-the-clock monitoring of motorists, including drivers of both commercial and private vehicles, on major highways and urban routes.

According to the statement, the operation was approved by the Acting Commander General of TRACE, Commander Elias Omonayajo Adedayo, who oversees the day-to-day administration of the agency.

“The yuletide special operation will commence on Monday, December 22, 2025, and end on Monday, January 5, 2026,” the statement noted.

“It will cover 18 major traffic corridors across Ogun State to ensure free flow of vehicles and enhance road safety.”

The routes to be covered include the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; Interchange–Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode–Benin–Ore Expressway; Sango/Ota–Atan–Owode–Idiroko Highway; Atan–Lusada–Agbara–Badagry Highway; Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Interchange Expressway; Abeokuta–Ewekoro–Ifo–Sango/Ota Expressway; and the Rounder–Abeokuta–Olorunda–Ayetoro–Imeko–Ilara border route, among others.

TRACE said the operation would be carried out in collaboration with other security and safety agencies in the state, as well as through its Traffic Whistle Blower Initiative, Emergency Traffic Service, and the Community-Based Traffic Management Scheme, also known as TRACE Mayors.

Field commanders have been directed to ensure that operatives conduct themselves professionally throughout the period.

“All personnel must remain civil, firm, fair and presentable in the discharge of their duties,” the agency said.

While extending festive greetings to Christians and all road users, TRACE warned motorists against drink-driving, excessive speeding and unnecessary night travel.

“Road users are advised to plan their journeys properly and strictly obey traffic rules and regulations,” the statement added.

“Any vehicle impounded for traffic violations during the festive period will not be released until the end of the special operation on January 5, 2026.”

The agency also released emergency contact numbers—0806 270 3568 and 0803 491 9165—for motorists requiring assistance during the yuletide season.

Ogun State often experiences heavy traffic during the festive period due to its strategic location as a major transit route linking Lagos with other parts of the country, particularly along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sagamu–Benin and Idiroko border corridors.
