A truck crash involving multiple vehicles has claimed the lives of two people and left three others critically injured near Meiran Primary Health Centre, Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, said in a statement on Wednesday that the incident occurred when a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck lost control due to brake failure while speeding along Iyana Meiran inward Meiran Road.
“The runaway truck forcefully collided with a commercial mini-bus, popularly called Korope, as well as four tricycles. The impact caused severe damage and trapped commuters inside the mangled vehicles,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He added that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
LASTMA officials, with assistance from passersby, quickly rescued the three trapped victims and transported them to Mobonke Hospital for urgent care.
“All injured victims were promptly evacuated and are receiving intensive medical attention,” Bakare-Oki said.
Security forces from the Meiran Police Division were also alerted and provided crucial support at the scene.
“The Divisional Police Officer personally led his team to secure the area and ensure the safety of responders while preventing secondary collisions,” he added.
Bakare-Oki appealed to motorists to observe government-regulated speed limits and emphasized that mechanical failures and speeding remain preventable causes of fatal accidents.
He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
