A train collided with a commercial Toyota Hiace bus on Monday night at Arena, Oshodi, Lagos State, but no casualty or death was recorded, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has said.
In a preliminary report dated December 23, 2025, the Permanent Secretary of the agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that all occupants involved in the crash escaped unhurt despite the severity of the impact.
According to LASEMA, the incident occurred late Monday evening, prompting an immediate emergency response after distress calls were received through the agency’s toll-free emergency lines.
“Following distress alerts received via our 767/112 emergency lines at about 7:53pm, LASEMA activated the state’s emergency response plan from its Cappa Base in Oshodi and deployed its response team to the scene,” the agency said.
LASEMA explained that its response team arrived at the scene around 8:11pm and found that an oncoming train had collided with a white Toyota Hiace bus bearing registration number AGL-671-XR.
“Upon arrival at the incident scene, it was discovered that a train had collided with a Toyota Hiace bus at Arena, Oshodi,” the report stated.
Preliminary findings by the agency indicated that reckless driving by the bus driver was responsible for the crash.
“Initial investigations revealed that the accident was caused by reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Hiace bus driver while driving outside the Arena Shopping Complex.
The bus was subsequently hit by an oncoming train and got stuck on the rail tracks,” LASEMA said.
Despite the force of the collision, the agency said no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
“Fortunately, no casualty or mortality was recorded as a result of the incident,” it added.
However, the bus sustained extensive damage due to the impact.
“The crash resulted in significant damage to the Toyota Hiace bus owing to the magnitude of the collision,” the agency noted.
LASEMA said its officials carried out a risk assessment at the scene and put safety measures in place to prevent further incidents, while train operations were temporarily suspended.
“Our response team conducted a comprehensive risk assessment and activated necessary safety and control measures to prevent any secondary incidents,” the agency said, adding that, “train operations were halted to enable the safe evacuation of the bus from the rail tracks.”
The agency further confirmed that the damaged bus had been removed from the tracks and towed to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority yard in Oshodi.
“The affected bus has been successfully extracted from the railway tracks and towed to the LASTMA yard in Oshodi,” LASEMA stated.
It added that the rail line has since been cleared and normal train operations restored.
“The rail track has been freed and normal activities have resumed.
Recovery operations have been successfully concluded,” the agency said.
