The Lagos State Police Command has arrested popular TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a viral video that showed him driving recklessly and crashing his vehicle during a live broadcast.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police said the arrest was prompted by public outrage after the incident, which occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
According to the statement, the suspect’s conduct posed a grave danger to public safety and required urgent police intervention.
“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained Habeeb Hamzat, also known as ‘Peller’, for further investigation following a viral video in which he was seen driving recklessly and crashing his vehicle while live-streaming, thereby endangering his life and that of other road users,” the police said.
The command described the act as highly dangerous, warning that it could have resulted in loss of lives.
“Such behaviour constitutes a serious threat to public safety and amounts to a deliberate action capable of causing fatal consequences to the suspect and innocent members of the public,” the statement added.
Police further disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
“The matter is currently under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). At the conclusion of the probe, the suspect will be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction in line with the law,” the statement noted.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a strong warning to social media influencers and members of the public against using online platforms to promote unlawful or dangerous acts.
“Social media must not be used as a tool to glorify reckless, criminal or life-threatening behaviour. Such actions will no longer be tolerated,” Jimoh warned.
He assured Lagos residents that the command would enforce the law without bias.
“The full weight of the law will be applied to anyone found engaging in acts that endanger lives, regardless of social status or online popularity,” he said.
The incident has reignited public concern over risky stunts by content creators seeking online attention. Many Nigerians have called for stricter enforcement of traffic and safety laws to deter similar actions.
Authorities have repeatedly stressed that reckless driving, speeding and distracted driving remain major causes of road crashes in Lagos, adding that offenders will continue to face prosecution as part of efforts to ensure public safety on the state’s roads.
