UCL: Balogun fires Monaco to 1-0 win over Galatasaray

Monaco climbed to 18th place in the Champions League league phase after grinding out a hard-earned 1–0 victory over Galatasaray at the Stade Louis II, a result that keeps their knockout hopes alive with two games remaining.

The French side were wasteful for much of the night, including a missed penalty from Denis Zakaria, but Folarin Balogun finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half, punishing the visitors after a string of missed opportunities.

A nervy first half

Both teams entered the matchup with an extra day’s rest, yet the early exchanges were hesitant and lacking in rhythm. Even so, Galatasaray carved out the better openings.

İlkay Gündoğan should have scored from close range, while Victor Osimhen twice threatened from his deliveries, first heading over, then drilling wide with a deflected effort.

Barış Yılmaz came closest to an opener for the Turkish champions, rattling the post after capitalising on loose defending from Vanderson.

Monaco were struggling to breathe until Maghnes Akliouche sparked them into life with a dipping effort that forced Uğurcan Çakır to stretch.

The momentum began to shift as chances fell to Balogun and Zakaria, but neither midfielder nor striker could find accuracy in front of goal.

Leroy Sané and Gabriel Sara tested Lucas Hrádecký at the other end, yet the two teams reached half-time at a stalemate.

Missed chances… then the breakthrough

Monaco emerged from the tunnel with far greater urgency. Takumi Minamino squandered a huge chance right in front of goal, then won a penalty moments later after a clumsy challenge from Davinson Sánchez.

Zakaria stepped up, but his strike down the centre was kept out brilliantly as Çakır stuck out a trailing leg.

Still, Monaco pushed on. Minamino twice set up Balogun with clear openings, only for the American to miss the target on both occasions, one dragged wide, another blasted over with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Galatasaray then lost their heroic goalkeeper to injury, and his replacement Günay Güvenç was soon picking the ball out of his net.

From an inswinging corner, Tilo Kehrer nodded the ball into the six-yard area, where Balogun spun and poked home for his third goal in successive Champions League matches.

Holding on for three points

Sara threatened to stun the home crowd with a fierce strike into the side-netting, but Monaco continued to look the more dangerous side on the counter.

Mohamed Camara flashed an effort over before the hosts defended resolutely to see out the game.

With heavyweight clashes against Real Madrid and Juventus still ahead, this victory could prove decisive in Monaco’s push for the knockout rounds, a night of frustration that ultimately ended in relief.
