Georginio Rutter’s dramatic stoppage-time finish denied West Ham a rare triumph over bogey side Brighton, as the Seagulls snatched a 1-1 draw after Jarrod Bowen’s extraordinary solo effort looked set to seal all three points.
Bowen, pushing to secure his place in England’s World Cup squad, opened the scoring with a goal of sheer improvisation.
Chasing a loose ball with Ferdi Kadioglu, the Hammers skipper slid into the challenge but somehow steered the ball past Bart Verbruggen and inside the far corner, all in a single, fluid movement.
It was a moment that nearly delivered what would have been only West Ham’s second Premier League victory over Brighton in their 17 meetings.
But the home side, far from their best on a wet and blustery south-coast evening, refused to give in.
Brighton started brightly, with Maxim De Cuyper almost sneaking a cross inside Alphonse Areola’s near post, while Diego Gómez headed wide from a promising set piece.
West Ham responded as Lucas Paquetá, back in the side after suspension, sprayed passes and linked play with menace.
The visitors should have led before the interval when Paquetá dispossessed Lewis Dunk and fed Crysencio Summerville clean through, only for the Dutch winger to drag his finish wide of the far upright.
Dunk, making his 501st appearance for the Seagulls, later turned defensive saviour, sprinting back the length of the pitch to thwart a devastating West Ham break. Verbruggen then produced a brilliant double stop to deny Bowen and Summerville in quick succession.
But the deadlock was finally broken 17 minutes from time. Jan Paul van Hecke misjudged a header, allowing substitute Callum Wilson to drive forward and slip Bowen through. Even forced wide, Bowen’s determination paid off as he slid the ball beyond Verbruggen in remarkable fashion.
Brighton almost levelled immediately when Rutter’s cross deflected off Max Kilman and clipped the bar, but the French forward did eventually make his mark in added time.
Areola saved his first strike, but Rutter reacted quickest to bury the rebound. A tense VAR review confirmed no handball, sparking relief around the Amex.
There was still late drama as Konstantinos Mavropanos flashed a header narrowly wide for West Ham, but the Seagulls escaped with a hard-fought point, and the Hammers were left to rue what might have been.
