Five students of the Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, who were kidnapped from the institution’s satellite campus in Emuoha Local Government Area on Tuesday, have regained their freedom.
The incident had triggered panic among students, who staged a protest demanding immediate relocation to the main campus for safety. Addressing the aggrieved students, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, announced a temporary shutdown of academic activities at the Emuoha campus and ordered all students residing there to vacate the premises pending further notice.
Confirming the rescue on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the students were recovered unharmed during an operation at Rumuodogo 2, carried out by police tactical units with support from other security agencies and community members.
“All five victims were rescued unhurt following a coordinated operation at Rumuodogo 2,” Iringe-Koko said.
“The Command’s tactical teams, working alongside sister security agencies and with assistance from the host community, ensured the safe recovery of the undergraduates.”
According to her, the rescued students — identified as Prince London, Azubuike Kelechukwu, Elizabeth Aniete, Onyebuchi Precious, and Sampson London — have been taken to a medical facility for evaluation.
She added, “Intensive efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing abductors. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents of the state.”
The police spokesperson reiterated the command’s resolve to clamp down on cult-related criminal activity in the area, assuring students and residents of continued protection.
