The Lagos State Police Command has suspended an Egungun festival scheduled to hold this Friday and Saturday in the Oregun area, following the circulation of posters and online messages warning residents to stay indoors during the event.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that several suspects linked to the publications were arrested for allegedly operating under the name Oje Parapo of Oregun and distributing materials that threatened residents’ freedom of movement and safety.
According to Adebisi, the publications were capable of stirring panic and disrupting public order.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has therefore ordered the immediate suspension of the festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025,” the statement read.
The police warned that activities capable of inciting fear would not be tolerated. “The Command will not permit any cultural event or gathering that threatens public peace or endangers the lives of residents,” Adebisi added.
The incident mirrors another disruption earlier on November 23 in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where 12 people were arrested for allegedly attempting to spread fear through provocative publications.
The police said all suspects are currently under investigation and will be prosecuted upon conclusion of inquiries.
Reiterating the ban, the Police Commissioner instructed the Oje Parapo group to discontinue any preparations for the event.
“Security for such an event cannot be guaranteed at this time,” CP Jimoh reportedly said, describing the tension already created in the community as unacceptable.
He also cautioned that anyone attempting to instigate unrest would face the full force of the law.
“We will not hesitate to act decisively against individuals or groups undermining public peace,” he warned.
The Command urged residents of Oregun and the wider Lagos community to go about their lawful activities without fear, assuring them of sustained police presence and continued protection of lives and property.
