Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has called for a thorough explanation from military authorities following the withdrawal of soldiers from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, shortly before armed men abducted several students in the Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.
The governor expressed his concerns on Thursday while hosting the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Joe Ajaero, who paid a solidarity visit to the state in the wake of the incident.
Governor Idris described the situation as alarming, noting that the state government had earlier shared intelligence alerts indicating threats around the school.
“I am deeply troubled that security personnel left the school despite the warnings we provided,” he said. “We gave intelligence reports. We raised alarms. So, who issued the order for troops to withdraw at such a critical hour?”
According to him, the soldiers reportedly pulled out around 3am, and within 45 minutes, the assailants launched their attack, making away with dozens of schoolgirls.
He added that the move contradicted earlier assurances of reinforced security in schools located in high-risk border communities frequently targeted by bandits.
Ajaero, in his remarks, commiserated with the state government and the families of the abducted students, urging federal security agencies to prioritise the safe rescue of the girls.
“We stand with the people of Kebbi State at this difficult time,” the NLC President said.
“The federal security architecture must act decisively to ensure the immediate return of these children.”
