At least three people, including an expatriate and two security operatives, have been killed in an attack on the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway construction project in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State, while two civilians sustained gunshot injuries.
According to Channels Television, the attack occurred at a construction site in Gubba Village, through Andarai District, according to the Kebbi State Police Command.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Bashir Usman, said the assailants were suspected to be Lakurawa terrorists who allegedly crossed into the area from the Kebbe axis of neighbouring Sokoto State.
Usman disclosed that the two security operatives and the foreign national were killed during the assault, while the injured civilians were evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.
He added that another attack by suspected members of the group along the Birnin Malam axis was repelled by police operatives on the same day.
The police spokesperson said joint security forces had responded to the incidents, with tactical teams deployed to reinforce security and prevent further attacks in the affected communities.
He further revealed that military personnel neutralised scores of the attackers and recovered several motorcycles during the security operations.
Following the incident, construction work at the affected site was suspended as security agencies intensified surveillance and deployed additional personnel to the area.
Usman assured workers on the project of the government’s commitment to their safety and urged them to remain calm as security operatives continued efforts to protect lives and property.
Meanwhile, Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, recently visited Jandutsi and neighbouring communities around Gubba Village to sympathise with residents over recent bandit attacks.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving security and protecting communities affected by the violence.
