Obiano alive, ex-commissioner debunks death rumours

A former Commissioner for Information in Anambra State, Mr. Don Adinuba, has dismissed widespread rumours alleging that ex-governor Willie Obiano has died.

Speaking with The Cable, Adinuba said that the former governor is “alive, strong and in good health” at his residence in Houston, United States.

The rumour, which circulated on social media on Friday, claimed that Obiano passed away in London after an undisclosed illness.

But Adinuba, in the telephone interview, described the reports as “provocative” and “completely unfounded.”

“I have been asked probing questions by journalists about a rumour concerning the death of former Governor Willie Obiano. The claim is not true,” he said.

“I just spoke with the former governor and members of his family a few minutes ago. He is hale and hearty in Houston, United States, where he resides.”

He stressed that Obiano had neither travelled to London nor been hospitalised, urging the public to disregard the false report.

“Contrary to the circulating stories, he is not in London and has not been admitted in any hospital. He is strong, healthy, and in good spirits. Please ignore the rumour—it is not from any credible source,” he added.

Obiano’s personal publicist, Tony Nezianya, also stated that he had not received any information suggesting that the former governor was dead.

“I cannot confirm such news. I am not aware of anything like that.”

Willie Obiano, who governed Anambra State from 2014 to 2022 before handing over to Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, is from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area. Born on August 8, 1955, he is currently being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged N4 billion fraud.

Both Adinuba and Nezianya have therefore urged the public to ignore the viral claims, insisting that the former governor remains alive and well.
