EPL: Brentford beat Newcastle 3-1 Amid controversy

Newcastle remain winless on the road this season after Brentford ran out 3-1 winners in a chaotic and controversial clash at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.

The Magpies initially took the lead through Harvey Barnes, who capitalised on a cross from Jacob Murphy, finishing low past Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.

Barnes, starting in place of the injured Anthony Gordon, showcased his skill by twisting past Michael Kayode and Yehor Yarmolyuk before slotting home.

However, Brentford quickly turned the game on its head in a match defined by long throws, VAR debates, and disciplinary drama. Kevin Schade equalised after Nick Pope failed to deal with a Kayode throw-in, heading the ball into an unguarded net.

The first controversy arose when Dango Ouattara went down under a challenge from Dan Burn.

Referee Stuart Attwell denied Brentford a penalty and booked Ouattara for simulation, a decision VAR official Paul Tierney controversially upheld.

Moments later, Ouattara went down again after another challenge from Burn, and this time Attwell awarded a penalty, sending Burn off with a second yellow card. Igor Thiago converted the spot-kick and later added a stoppage-time goal to complete the scoring, leaving Newcastle to rue another disappointing away day, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Eddie Howe’s managerial tenure.

The Bees had dominated early, with Mikkel Damsgaard’s dangerous delivery and Thiago’s shot testing Pope, who was later replaced by Aaron Ramsdale due to injury.

Newcastle threatened to respond through Anthony Elanga, but Rico Henry’s last-ditch intervention prevented a tap-in. In stoppage time, Thiago capitalised on a Malick Thiaw slip to complete Brentford’s emphatic victory.

Brentford’s persistence and ability to exploit set-pieces, combined with Newcastle’s defensive errors and controversial refereeing decisions, sealed a memorable day for the home side while extending the Magpies’ struggles away from St James’ Park.
