Real Sociedad’s hopes of extending their winning streak to four games were dashed on Friday night, as Mikel Oyarzabal’s late penalty could only secure a 1-1 draw against Elche in La Liga.
Elche, sitting five spots above Sociedad before kickoff, began the match on the front foot and repeatedly tested visiting keeper Álex Remiro, who stood firm to keep his side level through the first half.
Their persistence paid off just past the hour mark when a looping cross from the right evaded everyone in the box, allowing Álvaro Rodríguez to control smartly and blast a powerful shot into the top corner.
It looked set to be Elche’s first league win since September 28 until the dying minutes, when defender David Affengruber clipped Umar Sadiq inside the area.
Oyarzabal stepped up and coolly converted from the spot, rescuing a point for Sociedad and denying Elche a long-awaited victory.
