Delta varsity rusticates student for filming dying colleague

Delta State University, Abraka, has rusticated a 200-level Microbiology student, Ezi Ugoma, for allegedly recording a dying colleague at the institution’s health centre and uploading the video on TikTok.

According to The PUNCH, the disciplinary action, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel O. Asagba, will see the student suspended for four semesters, with resumption expected in the 2027/2028 academic session.

This was contained in a letter dated October 21, 2025, and signed by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Ughwumiakpor A., which stated that Ugoma appeared before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee in August to respond to allegations of gross misconduct and breach of her matriculation oath.

“You appeared before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee to defend yourself against allegations of inappropriate filming with a mobile phone of a dying student at the University Health Centre,” the letter read.

“After reviewing the committee’s report, the Vice-Chancellor has approved that you be rusticated for four semesters with effect from the 2025/2026 academic session. You are to resume your studies in the 2027/2028 academic session.”

The institution also noted that copies of the decision had been forwarded to Ugoma’s sponsor and relevant school authorities.

Meanwhile, the decision has sparked reactions on social media, with some Nigerians calling for a review of the punishment.

Arise TV presenter, Rufai Oseni, condemned the sanction in a post on X, describing it as excessive.

“Please, sir, do not allow this injustice to stand as this young lady’s future is about to be shattered,” Oseni wrote, while appealing to the Vice-Chancellor to reconsider the punishment.

He further claimed that Ugoma’s stepfather had threatened to withdraw support and send her back to their village following the sanction.
