Afonso Moreira delivered late heroics for Olympique Lyonnais, netting a sensational 91st-minute strike to seal a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Strasbourg at the Groupama Stadium, marking Le Racing’s 21st Ligue 1 defeat to Lyon in the 21st century.
The encounter brought together two sides with lofty ambitions, and it didn’t take long for both to show intent.
Lyon’s Pavel Sulc forced an early save from Mike Penders, while at the opposite end, Julio Enciso tested Dominik Greif as chances came at both ends.
Strasbourg, boasting the league’s highest shot conversion rate (18.5%) before kickoff, made that efficiency count midway through the first half.
In-form Argentine striker Joaquin Panichelli, scoring for the ninth time in 12 appearances, rose highest to head Guela Doué’s delivery into the far corner.
Lyon responded swiftly, albeit with a slice of luck. Malick Fofana’s cross deflected off Ismael Doukouré and wrong-footed Penders for an own goal.
Tyler Morton’s clever through ball in the build-up deserved equal recognition.
The hosts had the perfect chance to complete the turnaround before halftime when Corentin Tolisso was fouled in the box by Valentin Barco.
However, Penders produced a fine save to deny Tolisso from the spot — a moment of poetic justice given Barco’s minimal contact on the ball.
After the break, the match settled into a cagey rhythm. Diego Moreira came close for Strasbourg, drilling wide from Panichelli’s layoff.
The visitors’ hopes took a major hit when Doukouré was shown red for a reckless challenge on Fofana, which unfortunately also forced the Lyon winger off injured.
Despite the numerical advantage, Lyon struggled to break through. Sulc missed a free header, and Strasbourg appeared on course to cling to a draw, until Moreira’s moment of brilliance changed everything. Cutting inside from the left, the substitute unleashed an unstoppable curler into the top corner, sending the home fans into wild celebration.
The victory halts Lyon’s two-match losing streak and propels Paulo Fonseca’s men to fourth place, just two points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, while Strasbourg tumble to seventh in the standings.
