UCL: Chelsea humble Ajax 5-1

Chelsea’s young guns lit up Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, thrashing a lacklustre Ajax side 5-1 in a Champions League clash packed with drama, penalties, and history.

On a rain-soaked London evening, Enzo Maresca’s youthful side delivered a scintillating performance that saw them become the first team ever to have three teenagers score in a single Champions League match.

Maresca made sweeping changes from the team that demolished Nottingham Forest at the weekend, yet the Blues showed no signs of slowing down.

Ajax’s misery began early when Kenneth Taylor was sent off just 17 minutes in for a reckless tackle on Facundo Buonanotte.

Chelsea wasted no time capitalising on the advantage, with Marc Guiu tapping in the opener before Moises Caicedo’s deflected strike doubled the lead nine minutes later.

The visitors briefly found hope when Wout Weghorst converted from the penalty spot after Tosin Adarabioyo’s foul on Raul Moro.

However, that spark quickly faded when Weghorst conceded a penalty at the other end for a foul on Enzo Fernandez, who made no mistake from 12 yards.

Moments before half-time, Chelsea were awarded a third penalty after Youri Baas tripped teenage sensation Estevao Willian. The Brazilian stepped up confidently, after being handed the ball by Fernandez and powered his effort into the top corner.

After the break, Maresca introduced more youngsters, and Tyrique George added the finishing touch to a memorable night with a long-range strike that deflected past the stranded Remko Pasveer.

It was a statement victory for Chelsea’s next generation, a night when youth, flair, and fearlessness reigned supreme in west London.
