Villarreal became the latest victims of Erling Haaland’s unstoppable scoring streak, as the Norwegian struck again to make it nine consecutive games on target for Manchester City.
His early goal set the tone for a comfortable 2-0 victory in Spain, with Bernardo Silva adding a second before halftime to cap off a dominant opening period.
Though Villarreal threatened sporadically after the break, City rarely looked troubled. When Haaland was substituted five minutes from time, home fans breathed a sigh of relief, his damage had long been done.
From the first whistle, City were relentless. Within 26 seconds, Haaland, Savinho, and Jérémy Doku combined to test goalkeeper Luíz Júnior, before the Norwegian headed narrowly wide moments later.
Pep Guardiola’s tactical setup was fluid, shifting between shapes that at times resembled a 3-2-4-1 formation.
John Stones seamlessly alternated between defence and midfield, adjusting based on whether City had possession, which, for much of the game, they did.
With 69% possession in the first half (a figure that felt even higher), City’s control was near total, a reminder that Guardiola’s side are once again finding their frightening rhythm.
