UCL: Newcastle trash Mourinho’s Benfica 3-0

Newcastle United continued their impressive Champions League run with a commanding 3-0 victory over Portuguese giants Benfica at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.

Anthony Gordon opened the scoring, while substitute Harvey Barnes struck twice in the second half to seal the win and secure back-to-back victories for Eddie Howe’s men in Europe.

The Magpies started brightly, driven by the energy of their home crowd, and created several early chances.

Gordon, who has been in scintillating form, finally broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute after a slick attacking move, slotting home to score in his third consecutive Champions League game.

Benfica, on the other hand, threatened occasionally on the counter but were repeatedly denied by the alertness of goalkeeper Nick Pope and Newcastle’s disciplined backline.

After the break, Newcastle took full control of proceedings, pressing high and dictating the tempo. Their persistence paid off in the 70th minute in an unusual fashion, goalkeeper Nick Pope launched a precise long ball that Barnes latched onto before finishing coolly past the Benfica keeper to make it 2-0.

It was a rare assist for Pope and a moment that underlined Newcastle’s confidence.

Barnes, who had been introduced midway through the second half, wasn’t done yet. Seven minutes from time, he combined brilliantly with Gordon, latching onto the winger’s perfectly weighted through ball before calmly firing through the goalkeeper’s legs to complete his brace.

The goal put the game beyond reach and capped a fine individual display from the Englishman.

The victory leaves Newcastle in a strong position in their Champions League group, while Benfica’s miserable campaign continues, the Portuguese side have now suffered three defeats in as many games.

For Eddie Howe’s men, the result was another statement performance that showcased their growing European credentials and attacking depth.
