Kaduna college lecturers suspend strike

Lecturers at the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, have called off their three-week strike following assurances from the state government to implement key demands, including a revised salary structure and an increased retirement age for non-academic staff.

This development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Kafanchan by Dr. Christopher Yerima, Chairman of the College of Education Academic Staff Union, Gidan Waya chapter.

According to Yerima, the decision to end the strike came after a meeting with Governor Uba Sani on October 17, where the government pledged to implement 70% of the Consolidated Polytechnic and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure starting in October.

“Our union embarked on an indefinite strike on September 30, following the directive of the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna State,” Yerima explained. “This action was taken due to the government’s failure to implement the agreement reached on August 18, which addressed the new salary structure and the 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff.”

He further noted, “After fruitful discussions with the governor, we are pleased to announce that the government has agreed to meet a substantial part of our demands. As a result, we have resolved to suspend the strike in the interest of our students and the academic calendar.”

Yerima also confirmed that the government has committed to fully implementing the new retirement age of 65 years for non-academic personnel, aligning with national standards.

He expressed appreciation for the unity and resilience shown by members of the union throughout the duration of the strike.“The unwavering solidarity demonstrated by our members has been critical in achieving this outcome,” he said.

The strike, which disrupted academic activities at both the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, and Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, was initiated after repeated calls and ultimatums to the state government were reportedly ignored.

The Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna State had accused the government of backtracking on earlier agreements reached in August 2025, which were intended to harmonize salary structures and standardize retirement ages for staff across tertiary institutions in the state.
