Gombe varsity ASUU suspends planned strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total and indefinite strike after the state government and university management pledged to implement agreements reached with the union by October 2026.

The decision followed a congress meeting held by the union on Friday, August 21, where members reviewed developments concerning the implementation of a new salary structure and payment of outstanding entitlements.

The resolution, signed by the branch Chairman, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng, said the congress considered a letter from the Gombe State Government on the commencement of the new salary scale for academic staff.

The union also reviewed a Memorandum of Understanding reached with the university management concerning the payment of outstanding arrears owed to members.

Following deliberations, the congress resolved to suspend the planned industrial action and allow the government and management time to fulfil their commitments.

The union said, “The Congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026.”

ASUU, however, stressed that the suspension was conditional and warned that it would revive the strike if the agreements were not implemented within the stipulated period.

It added, “The Congress also resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action in the event of a failure to implement the content of the documents.”

The union therefore gave the state government and university management until the end of October to demonstrate their commitment to the agreements and resolve the outstanding issues affecting its members.
