Ondo magistrates, others call off strike

Magistrates and other judicial officers in Ondo State have suspended their two-week industrial action following negotiations with the state government over financial autonomy and welfare concerns.

The strike, which began in early January 2026, disrupted court activities across the state, leading to the adjournment of numerous cases. Those involved included magistrates, Presidents of Grade A Customary Courts, and legal research officers under a joint coalition within the Ondo State Judiciary.

Announcing the suspension in Akure on Tuesday, the coalition said the decision was reached after a series of engagements with the executive arm of government and other stakeholders. The statement was jointly signed by the coalition’s leaders, Mrs O. Edwin and Mr Segun Rotiba.

According to the coalition, discussions focused on the judiciary’s long-standing demand for financial autonomy and improved welfare packages for its members.

“Following the withdrawal of our services, there were sustained meetings and engagements with the executive arm of government on our immediate demands, particularly the issue of financial autonomy for the Ondo State Judiciary,” the statement said.

It added that the meetings involved key stakeholders, including the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria and representatives of the state government.

The coalition disclosed that agreements were reached on several issues, including the provision of official vehicles for magistrates and Presidents of Grade A Customary Courts, as well as the introduction of a new salary structure for magistrates, court presidents, and legal research officers.

“After extensive deliberations and a realistic agreement on all outstanding issues, coupled with the government’s demonstration of good faith and commitment towards immediate implementation of judicial autonomy and other demands, we have resolved to suspend the strike,” the statement noted.

Members were consequently directed to resume work with immediate effect.

The coalition also expressed appreciation to its members for their solidarity, JUSUN for its cooperation, legal practitioners for their understanding, and members of the public for their patience during the period of the strike.
