NSCDC deploy 4500 officers to Abuja for Independence Day

The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed 4,500 personnel to provide security during Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations in Abuja.

The FCT Command spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, adding that the Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, directed the deployment to ensure effective surveillance across the capital city.

According to Odumosu, the move was aimed at protecting lives, property, and Critical National Assets and Infrastructure before, during, and after the October 1 celebrations.

“We have drawn officers from specialised units such as the Female Strike Force, Arms Squad, Operation Adakasu, and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives, unit,” Ojobi said.

The Commandant stressed that black spots across the FCT, including uncompleted buildings that could serve as hideouts for criminals, were under watch. “All hands must be on deck. I will not tolerate any form of breaches, so therefore ensure you deploy your personnel adequately,” he warned.

Odumosu also directed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to ensure visibility in all area councils to avert security lapses. He urged his officers to maintain professionalism, work in synergy with other security agencies, and avoid harassment, intimidation, or accidental discharge.

The Commandant further appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.

“Be security conscious and support our efforts. Together, we can ensure a peaceful celebration,” he said.

He congratulated residents ahead of the anniversary, urging them to keep faith in Nigeria and pray for its unity and progress.

Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, marks its 65th anniversary this year under the theme: “Nigeria @65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
