EPL: Man City thrash Burnley 5-1

Manchester City extended their dominance over Burnley with a 5-1 victory at the Etihad, powered by two own goals from Maxime Estève and a late Erling Haaland double.

The Clarets, who have now lost 14 straight meetings with City, briefly threatened after Jaidon Anthony’s equaliser, but Pep Guardiola’s side eventually clicked into gear to cruise to another three points.

City’s opener came after just 12 minutes when Jérémy Doku wriggled past former teammate Kyle Walker inside the box.

His strike was parried by Martin Dúbravka, but the rebound fell awkwardly for Estève, who bundled into his own net under pressure from Phil Foden.

Burnley, however, grew into the contest. On 38 minutes, City’s sloppy passing gifted them possession high up the pitch. Quilindschy Hartman whipped in a low cross which Anthony swept home with the help of a Ruben Dias deflection, only the Clarets’ third goal against City in 14 matches.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Lyle Foster tried his luck with an overhead kick and then fired just wide after the restart.

But City’s quality told just past the hour mark. Josko Gvardiol delivered a deep cross to Haaland, who cushioned a header into the path of Matheus Nunes.

The Portuguese midfielder thumped a volley into the roof of the net to restore the lead.

Moments later, Oscar Bobb’s scuffed effort forced another own goal from Estève, effectively ending Burnley’s resistance.

City poured forward late on, and Haaland, who had earlier missed a golden chance, finally made his mark. The Norwegian buried Doku’s cross in the 90th minute before pouncing on a defensive mix-up in stoppage time to complete his brace.

After the game, Guardiola praised his players’ response in a tricky spell and reflected on how his side managed to find another gear when it mattered.
