Police nab six in Abuja ‘one chance’ robbery crackdown

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested six suspected members of a notorious “one chance” robbery gang, killing one during an exchange of gunfire.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the arrests took place on August 6, 2025, when officers from the Anti-One Chance Unit were on routine patrol along the Kubwa Expressway.

“At about 8:30 a.m., operatives spotted a victim, later identified as Angel Patrick, being pushed out of a moving vehicle,” Adeh said. “One team rescued her and rushed her to Zankwochi Hospital, Mabushi, for urgent medical care, while another team of undercover officers pursued the fleeing suspects to the Aso area of Mararaba, Nasarawa State.”

Adeh revealed that the chase escalated into a gun battle, resulting in the arrest of five suspects: Jude Simon of Mararaba, Emmanuel Akor, Daniel Benson, Uche Thomas, and Tope Ola, all residents of Mpape, Abuja. “One suspect sustained fatal injuries and was confirmed dead at Asokoro General Hospital,” she added.

The gang’s operational vehicle — a dark grey Toyota Corolla — was recovered alongside six ATM cards suspected to belong to previous victims, a jackknife, ₦115,000 in cash, and other personal effects.

Adeh also disclosed that one of the suspects, John Simon, had previously been arrested in December 2024 for the same offence and was remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre before resurfacing in the crime.

“The suspects freely confessed to being ‘one chance’ operators and admitted to years of involvement in the crime,” Adeh said.

FCT Commissioner of Police commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism, stressing that the command remains determined to dismantle criminal networks in the capital.

“We urge residents to remain vigilant, avoid unapproved vehicles, and patronise only designated motor parks,” he advised.
