The Akwa Ibom State Government has extended its maintenance agreement with construction giant Julius Berger Plc for the continued upkeep of the iconic Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Built to mirror Germany’s Allianz Arena, the 30,000-capacity edifice, fondly dubbed the ‘Nest of Champions’, was constructed between 2012 and 2014 at a cost of $96 million.
Boasting a natural grass surface, it stands as one of Nigeria’s top-tier sporting arenas, regularly playing host to international fixtures involving the Super Eagles.
Maintenance Deal Secured on Rolling Basis
The renewed contract grants Julius Berger Plc the responsibility of maintaining the stadium on a rolling basis, ensuring it remains in pristine condition for major sporting and entertainment events.
The decision to renew the deal was made during the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Uyo on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Governor Umo Eno chaired the session, with Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Civil Service, and various commissioners and special advisers in attendance.
Strategic Role in Sports, Youth, and Tourism
During the meeting, Governor Eno urged council members to stay the course in advancing the goals outlined in the ‘ARISE’ Agenda, the state’s blueprint for development.
The updated maintenance contract with Julius Berger officially began on July 1, 2025. It is part of the state’s broader initiative to safeguard the stadium’s status as a premier sports hub.
“The maintenance of the stadium remains a key priority of the government, given its role in sports development, youth engagement, and tourism,” said Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, Commissioner for Information, in a statement issued after the council meeting.
