Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
In a heartfelt condolence message shared via his official Facebook page, the governor described the revered monarch’s death as a monumental loss to Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the transition of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91,” the governor wrote.
He noted that the monarch’s passing, which coincided with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, deepens the nation’s grief.
“Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development. Under his reign, Ijebuland witnessed unparalleled cultural renaissance, infrastructural growth, and economic advancement,” the governor said.
Governor Abiodun also praised the late monarch’s efforts in projecting Yoruba culture on the global stage through the internationally celebrated Ojude Oba festival.
He further highlighted Oba Adetona’s enduring contributions to education, healthcare, and traditional leadership.
“His role in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to global recognition, alongside his enduring commitment to education, health, and tradition, will remain a timeless legacy. We honour his remarkable contributions and pray that his soul finds eternal rest,” he added.
Oba Adetona reigned for 65 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers.
