Liverpool Football Club has unveiled plans for a series of heartfelt tributes to late forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, when the team plays their first pre-season fixture on Sunday against Preston North End.
The tragic deaths of Jota and Silva occurred in a fatal car accident in northern Spain on July 3, prompting the club to postpone their return to pre-season training until Tuesday.
Despite the somber circumstances, the Reds will proceed with their friendly at Deepdale, home of the English Championship side Preston.
A number of commemorative gestures have been organized ahead of the 1400GMT kick-off.
Liverpool’s iconic anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” will be played in honour of the Portuguese international and his brother. Preston will place a wreath before the away fans, followed by a minute’s silence.
Digital tributes will be displayed on the stadium’s large screen and pitchside advertising boards, while all players will don black armbands to mark the occasion.
Jota, a father of three, had tied the knot with his longtime partner Rute Cardoso just 11 days prior to the crash.
The Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off the road and caught fire, claiming both their lives.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot, along with several senior squad members led by captain Virgil van Dijk, attended Jota’s funeral service last Saturday.
