The tanker, bearing registration number KMC 692 ZE and reportedly carrying 60,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil, veered off the highway and overturned after hitting a road divider.

The Oyo State Fire Service has since confirmed the incident. In a statement released on Sunday, the agency’s Chairman, Maroof Akinwande, noted that no lives were lost, although the vehicle was significantly damaged.

Providing further details, Akinwande said, “On Saturday 7th June, 2025, the agency’s control room center received a distressed call at exactly 12:30hrs. Immediately the address was taken, the fire Officers led by ACFS Adekola (Mrs) promptly deployed to the scene of the accident.”

He continued, “On arrival, we met a falling HOWO trailer tanker loaded with registration number KMC 692 ZE (Kano) loaded with 60,000 litres capacity of automotive gas oil (AGO) lost control whilst on motion, swerved off the road and somersaulted into a nearby road divider, content gushing out. We briskly carpeting the spillage with AFFF chemical foam compound to suppress the flammability of the liquid which can trigger fire from naked fire.”

Akinwande attributed the crash to reckless driving by the tanker operator and commended the swift intervention of emergency responders.

“The accident was due to reckless driving by the truck driver. No casualty was recorded but the tanker was damaged and fire service was able to save properties worth millions of naira,” he said.

Efforts by the fire service helped avert what could have been a major fire disaster, thanks to the timely use of firefighting chemicals to neutralize the fuel spill.
