Tragedy struck in Kyaramma village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Saturday evening when a head-on collision between two vehicles claimed the lives of nine people and left several others injured.
The accident, which occurred around 8:00 p.m., involved two Volkswagen Golf 3 saloon cars travelling in opposite directions.
One vehicle, bearing the registration number Kaduna MKA 687 AY, was driven by 35-year-old Adamu Sunusi from Hadejia Local Government Area. He was en route to Gujungu town from Abuja.
The second vehicle, KWL 606 KA, was driven by 30-year-old Bashari Danjummai from Sauna area in Nassarawa LGA, Kano State, and was heading to Kano from Hadejia.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, Shiisu Adam, he confirmed that both vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the immediate death of nine occupants, including the two drivers.
“Upon receiving the distress call, our Motor Traffic Division officers rushed to the scene and provided necessary assistance. The injured were taken to Ringim General Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment,” the statement read.
According to the police, eleven victims are being treated at the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmad Abdullahi, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“This unfortunate incident is a painful reminder of the importance of obeying traffic rules. We urge all road users to avoid speeding, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and exercise caution while driving,” the Commissioner advised.
