Watford legend, Troy Deeney, has weighed in on Liam Delap’s impending move to Chelsea, expressing concern that the young striker may be bypassing a vital phase in his career development.
Delap, 22, is on the verge of being unveiled as a Chelsea player after the Blues beat competition to secure his signature this summer.
The forward has reportedly completed the first phase of his medical ahead of the transfer, which is being finalized with Ipswich Town.
Sharing his thoughts on the move during a segment on talkSPORT, Deeney pointed out that a different club might have been a more suitable destination for Delap at this point in his journey.
“I think, personally, when I just look at Delap’s development, I thought Manchester United was a perfect fit [for him to join the club],” Deeney said.
“I think he’s missing a step in his development [by choosing Chelsea].
“The second Ipswich Town got relegated, he did not play [for them in the Premier League].
“Going to Manchester United at this stage of his career, he would’ve had to deal with the big experience.”
Delap’s move comes after a mixed spell at Ipswich, where he struggled for Premier League minutes following their relegation.
As he prepares for the next chapter at Stamford Bridge, Deeney’s comments underline the debate about whether a step to a club like Chelsea might be too soon.
