Already relegated Southampton set an unwanted Premier League record on Sunday as they became the first club to suffer 30 defeats in a single campaign, following a 2-1 loss to Arsenal at St Mary’s Stadium in their final game of the season.

Arsenal, having already secured a Champions League spot with a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United the previous weekend, wrapped up the season in second place for the third year running.

They ended the campaign 10 points adrift of title winners Liverpool, while Southampton remained rooted to the bottom of the table.

Substitute Martin Ødegaard delivered the decisive moment for the Gunners, smashing in a stunning goal in the 89th minute to clinch victory after Southampton’s Ross Stewart had earlier drawn the hosts level.

Kieran Tierney had earlier opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, signing off his final outing for the North London club in style.

The Scottish full-back found the net after connecting with a clever cutback from Ben White to beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
