Action Peoples Party disowns factional group in Rivers

The Action Peoples Party has denounced a factional group claiming to be the party’s authentic leadership in Rivers State, labeling them as impostors.

In a statement, APP National Chairman, Chief Uche Nnadi, recognized Chief Sunny Nwokekoro as the legitimate State Chairman, replacing Hon. Kenneth Atata, according to Independent.

The party urged the Inspector General of Police to arrest and prosecute the factional group.

The APP also endorsed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission’s decision to proceed with the October 5, 2024, local government elections, citing a court judgment. The party obtained the judgment and asserts its right to benefit from it.

The APP cautioned the IGP against taking partisan positions, emphasizing the need for neutrality. The party called for adequate security and maintenance of peace during and after the elections, as ordered by the court.

The APP encouraged Rivers State residents to vote for candidates of their choice, highlighting its own candidates as the best options for development.

The party expressed confidence in winning a majority of seats, citing the governor’s directive for supporters to join and contest under the APP banner.

The party’s national working committee has thrown its weight behind RSIEC’s decision, emphasizing the importance of obeying the court’s judgment. The APP believes its candidates possess the expertise to propel the state forward and urged voters to support them.

It supported the decision of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission to proceed with the conduct of the election, stating, “our party’s National Working Committee (NWC) endorses RSIEC’s decision to proceed with the election in obedience to Justice I.P.C. Igwe’s judgment, which mandates the Commission to conduct the election on Saturday, October 5th, 2024. Our party obtained that judgment, and we have a right to enjoy its benefits.”

The party reiterated the call on the Inspector General of Police to “be mindful and not allow the police institution to be further ridiculed by taking partisan positions. The RSIEC is under the command of a judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction to conduct the said election, and the Police cannot interfere with that order.”

“The APP is poised to win the majority of the seats in the state, as the Governor has directed his supporters to join the party and contest under its banner,” the party said.
