Ekiti State’s former Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has criticized Nigerian politicians for not treating leadership as a sacrifice, warning that the increasing number of despondent youths poses a significant threat.
Speaking at a leadership and economic summit on Thursday, Fayemi emphasized that leadership requires sacrifice, which is lacking in Nigeria.
He urged collective effort to build a transformed society, stressing that it’s not just the responsibility of the president and governors, according to Peoples Gazette.
Fayemi also expressed concerns about the Supreme Court’s verdict on local government financial autonomy, questioning its workability in Nigeria.
His warning comes amid planned nationwide protests over economic hardship since President Bola Tinubu took office, echoing his 2021 statement urging youths to strategize and bring about change.
“Leadership is sacrifice; we don’t treat leadership as a sacrifice in Nigeria. We just have to do things differently if we want this country to go the right way,” Mr Fayemi said Thursday at a leadership and economic summit by St. Racheal’s People Consulting.
“Otherwise, the time bomb is ticking, and I think we are going to run into a major problem if we don’t address this feeling of despondency, particularly among the youths and people. We all must contribute to leadership to build a transformed society- it isn’t just the president and the governors.”
