By Wilson Adekumola

A 12-year-old girl, Nabilat, tragically lost her life after falling into a domestic well in the Ikoyi Community of the Irewolede area, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The PUNCH reported that the incident happened around 10:35am on Saturday. The young girl had reportedly gone to fetch water when she slipped and plunged into the well.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the agency confirmed that they received a distress call from a resident, Mr. Mayowa, who witnessed the fall.

Firefighters were promptly mobilised to the location and succeeded in retrieving the victim’s body, which was later handed over to one of her family members.

“According to the report, the victim went to fetch water and in the process, one of her legs slipped off the ground, which made her tumble into the well,” the statement read.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and warned parents and guardians about the dangers of sending minors to fetch water from wells.

He emphasised the need for heightened caution, saying the practice continues to expose children to preventable risks.

“The general public must be more careful in their day-to-day activities, and parents should desist from sending underage children to fetch water in domestic wells,” he said.

The fatal incident has renewed discussions on the safety of domestic wells, which remain widespread in parts of Ilorin, especially during periods of inconsistent water supply.
