Why I left Real Madrid for Chelsea – Makelele

After years of silence, Claude Makelele has finally addressed the real reasons behind his unexpected departure from Real Madrid in the summer of 2003, a move that would go on to reshape his career and leave a lasting impact on football.

Makelele had been a vital cog in the Galacticos era, quietly anchoring a midfield packed with superstars.

His exit stunned fans and pundits alike, many of whom couldn’t understand why such a crucial player would walk away from one of the world’s most iconic clubs.

On the other hand, Chelsea fans welcomed the Frenchman with open arms, though the full story behind his transfer had remained a mystery, until now.

In a revealing conversation with a prominent sports publication, the former France international opened up for the first time about what really prompted the switch.

“Usually, you never leave because it’s the greatest club in the world. But the opportunity came because Roman Abramovich fought to bring me to Chelsea,” Makelele stated.

He described how the club’s new Russian owner went to great lengths to secure his signature.

“Yes, I spoke with him. He convinced me, along with Claudio Ranieri. They insisted relentlessly—I felt the club was truly fighting for me,” he recalled, noting how the persistence of Abramovich and Ranieri gave him a sense of value he no longer felt at Madrid.

“That’s why I decided to join Chelsea: they wanted me, they wanted me 100%. When I arrived, I gave everything for the club,” Makelele said, pointing to that sense of belief and determination from his new club as the turning point in his decision.

Makelele’s move to Chelsea turned out to be transformative, not just for the club but for football itself.

He became a cornerstone of the team, revolutionizing the defensive midfield role and inspiring a generation of players.

His time in London proved that leaving a glamorous club like Madrid wasn’t a step down, it was a bold step toward building a new legacy.

The Frenchman joined Chelsea in 2003 but it was the arrival of Mourinho that helped him truly shine.

Makélélé enjoyed a highly successful stint at Chelsea between 2003 and 2008, during which he played a pivotal role in establishing the club as a dominant force in English football.

During his five-year spell, he helped the Blues secure a total of five major trophies. These included back-to-back Premier League titles in the 2004–05 and 2005–06 seasons, under the management of José Mourinho.

He also added an FA Cup triumph in the 2006–07 campaign to his collection, along with two League Cup victories in 2004–05 and 2006–07.

Though he never lifted the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, Makélélé’s contributions were instrumental in shaping the club’s winning mentality and defensive stability during a golden era.
