Why I chose to play for Algeria – Zidane

Algeria goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, has revealed that his decision to represent the North African nation at international level was inspired by his grandfather.

Although eligible to play for France, the country his father, Zinedine Zidane, famously led to World Cup glory, the shot-stopper opted to pledge his future to Algeria and is currently featuring at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to CAFOnline after making his tournament debut against Sudan, Zidane said his grandfather played a key role in shaping his choice.

“My grandfather encouraged me to play for Algeria. He wanted me to be proud of my origins, and I wanted to honour him,” Zidane explained in an interview with CAFOnline.

He also highlighted the backing he received from his immediate family, particularly his father, who allowed him to make the final decision himself.

“My father told me to make my choice and to do it with conviction. It’s really nice that he came with my brother.

“I’ve always had my family’s support, and seeing them here at AFCON gives me even more strength to defend Algeria’s colours.”

Zidane’s comments underline the emotional and personal motivations behind his international allegiance, as he begins his journey with Algeria on the continental stage.
