Viral video: Man steals N1.4m from sick mother to gamble

A young Nigerian man has admitted to withdrawing N1.4m from his sick mother’s bank account and using the money to fund his betting activities.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, made the revelation in a social media post, detailing how he repeatedly withdrew money from his mother’s account before eventually losing the entire amount to betting.

According to him, he first withdrew N100,000 on September 13 and deposited the money into his betting account. He said he later withdrew another N200,000 the same day and used it for betting.

He added that he continued withdrawing money from the account in similar transactions until the total amount reached N1.4m, which he eventually lost while gambling.

He said, “On September 13, I withdrew N100,000 from my sick mother’s account and put it into my betting account. On the same day, I withdrew N200,000 and put it into my betting account. I withdrew another N300,000 on the same day. I continued withdrawing until it added up to N1.4m, which I used to gamble. But the money was gone.”

The revelation sparked reactions from social media users, with some criticising the young man for using money meant for his sick mother, while others shared personal experiences about the dangers of gambling.

Commenting on the incident, @Ogoja Boy questioned the repeated reference to September 13, writing, “Hahahahaha, wahala. How come everything or every date is 13, 13, 13? Entertainment Daily, Ogoja Boy.”

@Retel tv drew attention to the man’s emotional state, saying, “See the writing on his shirt and the tears dropping from his eyes. Tears, tears.”

Another user, @Michael Agaba, said he could relate to the experience, revealing that he had also lost money through gambling before turning to educate young people about its risks.

He wrote, “I can testify to that. Just pray you don’t get addicted; they will take everything from you. I’ve lost a lot, but God was merciful enough to give me a big win that cleared my losses. Since then, I decided to educate and help younger people stay away from gambling. I plan to build a page dedicated to educating African youths on building real-life financial security instead of going after gambling, because it is risky.”

@wolucjh Life blamed the individual rather than gambling itself, writing, “Don’t say gambling has messed up a generation. They say bet responsibly, but you are using money that is important to gamble. Please, the fault is with the guy. Don’t blame it on gambling.”

Similarly, @Jeasy Wisdom shared a personal experience, saying, “Betting is bad. I can relate. I used my school fees in 2021 to bet on Bet9ja. I nearly went crazy.”

Another user, @Michael Ayeni, appeared to question the man’s decision to continue betting despite his losses, writing, “And by this time, he still has the courage to read?”
