The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, presented the official UNESCO certificate designating the Sango Festival as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Abdulhakeem Owoade I.
The historic presentation occurred during the grand finale of the 2025 World Sango Festival in Oyo State, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy.
Speaking at the event, Musawa described the UNESCO recognition as a landmark achievement under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting its importance for sustainable development, tourism, and international relations. “We celebrate not just a festival, but a legacy,” Musawa declared. “The Sango Festival’s inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List affirms Nigeria’s position on the global cultural stage. This is a win for the Oyo Kingdom, the Yoruba nation, and all Nigerians.”
The minister commended the collaborative efforts between her ministry and the Oyo community, noting that the achievement aligns with the federal government’s objectives of cultural promotion, job creation, economic growth, and community empowerment.
In his response, the Alaafin of Oyo expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu and the Ministry for their dedication to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
“This honour reflects our shared dedication to celebrating and preserving our identity,” Oba Owoade I stated. “Oyo Kingdom stands ready to work with the Federal Government to sustain this cultural renaissance.”
The 2025 Sango Festival, which drew dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and international tourists, provided a vibrant backdrop for the certificate presentation.
