The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a serving officer along with three civilians over allegations of terrorising residents of Benin City through acts of armed robbery, extortion, and brutality.

In a statement issued in Benin on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrest, explaining that it stemmed from a viral video where a victim claimed he was abducted by policemen, who confiscated his phone and other belongings while subjecting him to harassment.

According to Yamu, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, upon receiving the report, ordered a swift investigation and immediate arrest of those involved.

“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” he revealed.

He further disclosed that a police inspector, alongside three civilian accomplices, was arrested for allegedly unleashing fear on residents of Benin through intimidation, harassment, and extortion.

Condemning the act, Agbonika described the development as “shameful and criminal,” assuring that the suspects would face the full wrath of the law.

“The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the Force.

“There will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police.

“Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” Yamu quoted the CP as saying.

The police spokesperson appealed to the public, particularly the victim seen in the viral video, to assist investigators with credible information to ensure justice is served.

He reiterated the Command’s determination to protect lives and property, rebuild public trust, and defend the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
