UK prisoner mistakenly released surrenders self

A prisoner mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in the United Kingdom, this week has turned himself in.

Billy Smith, 35, is one of two inmates to have been released from the prison in error within days.

The second prisoner, 24-year-old Algerian national Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, has not yet been located after his release from HMP Wandsworth on October 29.

Reports indicated he was accompanied to the prison by his partner, whom he hugged before speaking with prison staff at the entrance.

This development comes after Justice Minister Alex Davies-Jones disclosed that prison officials would be summoned for a meeting on November 6, while a team of digital specialists has been assigned to modernise the “archaic” paper-based system of prisoner records.

Surrey Police told PA Agency, “We are cancelling our appeal to help find wanted 35-year-old William Smith who was released in error from HMP Wandsworth on Monday, November 3. Smith handed himself in to HMP Wandsworth today.”
