A man who brutally murdered his wife in broad daylight while she was pushing their baby in a pram has been sentenced to life in prison in the United Kingdom.
Kulsuma Akter, 27, was residing in a refuge in Bradford when she was fatally attacked by her estranged husband, Habibur Masum, in April 2024.
The horrific assault happened in front of shocked witnesses as she walked through the city centre with their seven-month-old child, who was not physically harmed.
Masum, also 27, from Leamington Avenue in Burnley, was found guilty of murder last month after a trial at Bradford Crown Court.
On Tuesday, the same court handed him a life sentence with a minimum term of 28 years. Mr Justice Cotter, in delivering the sentence, described the attack as “vicious and merciless.”
“You pulled out a knife from your pocket and attacked her in full view of passers-by,” the judge said.
He detailed how Masum repeatedly targeted Ms Akter’s neck, adding that he “stamped on her” before ultimately “cutting her throat.”
The judge concluded, “The wounds you had inflicted were unsurvivable, as was your intention.”
