Paris Saint-Germain manager, Luis Enrique, has revealed how his team plans to contain Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal ahead of their highly anticipated UEFA Champions League encounter.
PSG will welcome the Spanish giants on Tuesday, October 20, with Enrique preparing to face his former club in a contest that promises to test both teams’ tactical abilities.
Yamal is expected to be one of Barcelona’s biggest attacking threats, having established himself as one of the most exciting young players in world football.
However, Enrique believes the most effective way to limit the teenager’s influence is to prevent Barcelona from maintaining possession.
Possession Key to Stopping Yamal
Barcelona have enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign under manager Hansi Flick, winning their opening 11 matches across competitions.
Their strong form presents a significant challenge for PSG, who will be determined to hand the Catalan side their first defeat of the season.
Rather than relying on a dedicated man-marking system to neutralise Yamal, Enrique intends to use possession as a defensive weapon, limiting the winger’s opportunities to receive the ball and create dangerous situations.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, the PSG manager explained his approach to dealing with the Barcelona star.
“It’s very simple: we mustn’t let him get the ball, because if he does, he’s a threat,” he told reporters. “The best way to defend against Lamine is to ensure Barca don’t have the ball.
“We must focus on what we can do. We know they have some very talented players – it’s not just Lamine. Raphinha, Pedri, [Pau] Cubarsi, Joan Garcia… there are plenty of them.”
Enrique also cautioned against comparing Yamal with Lionel Messi, insisting that the teenager should concentrate on developing his own identity rather than following the path of another football legend.
“Lamine Yamal wants to be Lamine Yamal. We cannot compare him to [Lionel] Messi or anyone else,” he stated. “He is very intelligent and has to continue to be himself.”
Enrique Motivated by Reunion With Former Club
Tuesday’s encounter will be a special occasion for Enrique, who previously managed Barcelona and represented the club during his playing career.
Despite his strong connection with the Spanish side, the PSG boss insists his immediate priority is securing victory for the French champions.
Reflecting on facing his former club, Enrique said, “I’m the PSG manager. At first, I found it hard to play against Barca, but I got used to it. Despite everything, I want to win tomorrow,” he declared. “It’s a major source of motivation to face the club that has meant the most to me throughout my career. They have some top-class players; it’s a sporting club with strong values.”
The prospect of ending Barcelona’s unbeaten start has also provided additional motivation for PSG as they prepare for the European showdown.
“It’s a source of motivation for us. We’re motivated by the prospect of being the only team to beat Barca this season,” Enrique admitted.
PSG and Barcelona Prepare for Tactical Battle
The match is expected to feature a contest for control of possession, with both sides favouring an attacking style built around keeping the ball and creating opportunities through technically gifted players.
Enrique acknowledged Barcelona’s quality and warned that small details could determine the outcome, while stressing that the encounter should not be treated as a final at this early stage of the competition.
“The structure of the competition means we’re facing each other at this stage, but it’s not a final. This has only just begun,” he noted.
The PSG manager also expressed admiration for Barcelona’s footballing philosophy and highlighted the importance of collective performance.
“We know Barcelona well; I love the way they play,” Enrique concluded. “It’ll be a tough game because of their quality players – the small details could make all the difference. There are some outstanding individual players in both teams, but victory has to be a team effort. They have a great sense of belonging. I know it’ll be a great match.”
With both teams boasting considerable attacking quality, PSG’s ability to control possession could prove crucial in limiting Yamal’s influence and securing a significant result in the Champions League.
