Two students killed in Philippines school shooting

Two students were killed in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, with the suspected gunman among the dead, authorities said.

The incident occurred at a school affiliated with the privately run Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.

Police said the Grade 9 student brought a pistol and a rifle onto the campus before opening fire inside a classroom.

The suspected shooter later took his own life, while the other victim was a male student in the grade above him, according to police.

University president Ernald Andal said the situation had been brought under control, adding that there were no further deaths or reported injuries.

“We do not want any of these things to happen. We wish to prioritize the safety of all our students,” Andal said.

Footage broadcast by local news channel ANC showed students and parents gathered outside the school, while armed police and soldiers were deployed around the premises. Crime scene investigators were also seen arriving at the school.

The shooting comes less than two months after another school attack in the Philippines.

In June, at least three students were killed and about 20 others injured when two students opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban City.

School shootings remain uncommon in the Philippines, which has relatively strict firearm regulations requiring background checks and psychological assessments.

However, illegal guns continue to circulate in the country.

The latest incident also occurred less than 10 days after a student went on a shooting rampage at a school near Bangkok, Thailand.
