Trump to hold Iran talks with security advisers

United States President, Donald Trump, is expected to hold talks on the Iran conflict on Monday with his top national security and foreign policy advisers, according to US media reports, as diplomatic efforts appear to have stalled between the rival parties.

The development comes after Iran’s top diplomat blamed Washington for the collapse of recent talks held in Pakistan, which marked the first and only round of negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and ease pressure on the global economy.

Axios global affairs correspondent Barak Ravid reported that the meeting would focus on determining the next steps in US policy toward Iran.

Citing two unnamed US officials, ABC News said Trump would consult key security advisers on Iran, noting that a new proposal from Tehran intended to resolve the crisis did not meet Washington’s red lines.

According to Axios, the Iranian proposal focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade on the strategic waterway, while pushing nuclear negotiations to a later stage.

Hopes for renewed diplomacy had briefly increased following Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Islamabad over the weekend.

However, those expectations faded after Trump cancelled a planned trip by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Speaking to Fox News after calling off the mission, Trump said, “they can come to us, or they can call us.”
